The new consolidated courthouse on Thunder Bay‘s south side is moving forward.
Infrastructure Ontario has released a request for qualifications to design, build, finance and maintain the facility between Brodie and Archibald streets, south of Miles Street.
The request is the first step in the process to select a team to develop and maintain the facility.
The building will consolidate the Ontario Court of Justice currently on Arthur Street in a building which opened in May 1975, and Superior Court on Camelot Street, whose building dates to the 1920s. It will increase the number of courtrooms available and provide better public access and security, the province says.
About 100 people work at the two facilities – Crown‘s office laywers, judges, court support staff and victim-witness workers. That doesn‘t include police, lawyers, witnesses, the accused and supporters.
Infrastructure Ontario is to issue a request for proposals for the project from pre-qualified firms later this summer or in early fall.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro said the project “is significant not only because it will provide us with a new consolidated courthouse, but also because it will create jobs and boost our economy. It is also strategic in its location and will be a part of the rejuvenation of the downtown core.”
The courthouse will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
Meanwhile, the city has said it‘s spending $1.9 million collecting the land to accommodate the courthouse. The Brodie Street bus depot will be moved. A study will determine its new location.
